Post Office
As senior UX Designer worked in a small agile team of UX designers, UI designers and business analysts on a project to replace the existing Post Office branch EPOS system.
Role involved working closely with business analysts, a visual designer and senior end users to design and deliver UX prototypes for the new Post Office electronic point of sale system. This fully responsive touch based system is to be rolled out in over 11,500 Post Office branches throughout the UK, with the new version being designed as a "mobile first" solution to run on devices ranging from hand held smartphones and tablets, through to fixed screen EPOS systems and self service kiosks.
Responsible for development of all high fidelity working prototypes, using Axure RP, for use in end user testing and evaluation and to act as pixel perfect design specifications for the front end development team to work from. Also involved with the analysis of the existing legacy system design and workflow, and proposing changes to improve system usability and the overall user experience.
Recruited to bring expertise and in depth knowledge of UX and UI front end web technologies to a high profile, mission critical "Crisis Hub" system in constant use by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO). The Crisis Hub tracks, assists and if necessary arranges for the evacuation of British nationals caught in crisis situations around the world.
Working within an agile scrum/kanban environment alongside the Government Digital Services (GDS) framework, continually met with stakeholders and users during the lean UX development process to quickly deliver a responsive accessible working solution that fully met their requirements.
The more challenging work undertaken by the project included the design and development of complex multiple mapping services; extensive use of open source libraries and consumption of open standard format data. To retain the open source nature of the FCO application: OpenStreetMap was used as the tile provider, Nominatim provided the geocoding, and the mapping application features were developed on top of the Leaflet Mapping API. These complex data visualisation and mapping features within a multidimensional system enabled the FCO to geographically locate individuals in crisis situations around the globe.
In crisis situations intermittent or non-existent web connectivity is commonplace with FCO operatives working in the field. The FCO wanted their staff and operatives to be able to continue to use the Crisis Hub even when there is no internet connection. In response to this requirement an offline application was developed which allowed authenticated users to securely store and retrieve protected data. Data was encrypted/decrypted with a combination of the user’s username and password, which provided the authentication. This offline capability was designed and built using a combination of: HTML5; CSS3 (SASS) and Bootstrap; JavaScript and Angular. Offline capabilities were utilised using the Application Cache and a combination of the browser’s Local and Session storage. Encryption of JSON data was done with Stanford JavaScript Crypto Library (SJCL).
The project aimed to produce intuitive software that delivered instant value not only to ministers and teams in Whitehall but also to FCO operatives overseas. The expertise and commitment that was brought to the project played a major part in the overwhelming success of the project in achieving this goal The Crisis Hub application as a whole has been demonstrated to many other government agencies and is considered to be a superlative example.
Worked in a senior role within a development team responsible for prototyping and delivery of both the Met Office public facing website and mobile equivalent employing responsive adaptive UX design and UI web development techniques. Working with the design team in identifying key aspects of user stories and ensuring that up-to-date best practices for user experience, usability and accessibility were delivered throughout to meet the business requirement.
Responsible for design and development of key front end functionality within an agile environment, including highly complex web pages and data visualisations built using a variety of the latest technologies: HTML5, CSS3 with particular focus on media queries based delivery to various devices, JavaScript/jQuery, XML, JSON, advanced mapping API OpenLayers, and SVG iconography with suitable fallbacks for non supporting browsers. Performance and delivery costs were considered at all times.
Managed development tasks and source control of code via JIRA, Git, SourceTree and Stash. Worked closely with the testing team from automated testing to user acceptance testing to deployment. Regularly held content discussions and demos with stakeholders to ensure that the customers needs were met at all times.
The Met Office website attracts millions of visitors each week, and as such code maintainability, cross browser and mobile device support, search engine optimisation, performance, UX design and usability, W3C compliance and accessibility were a key factor in all design and development work.

Ministry of Defence
During a ten month extension to the original six month contract with the Ministry of Defence (MoD), the process of updating and improving multiple legacy sub sites on several MoD secure intranets continued. Work on the design and build of new sites was also undertaken. Both work streams involved imposing logical, intuitive navigation upon complex datasets and required close liaison with information owners and the contract manager/sponsor.
Development work included:
The creation of a complex site designed to allow remote administration and data addition by overseas users across an international system. This site was built on time to the satisfaction of all parties and is currently in use distributing time-sensitive data to clients both within and outside the UK.
A web "front end" to a newly developed database for hosting on several secure intranets. This work involved close liaison with the software developers and the MoD producers. This site is designed to allow 24 hour real-time dissemination of data and allows easy additions to the database by the information producers and intuitive access to information by the sites intended audience.
The installation and configuration of an "off-the-shelf" Google search engine to crawl a defined region of a server containing client sensitive data achieved by working closely with the MoD system administrators. Style sheets to display the search interface and results pages in the house style were also developed.
The creation of the structure and content of the MoD internet site from information contained in an information brochure using the bespoke MoD Content Management System. This was completed within a very tight deadline to the satisfaction of the MoD senior management.

SW London and St. George's Mental Health NHS Trust
The Electronic Care plan Approach (eCPA) is a Department Of Health (DOH) mandated system for managing the Care Program Approach within NHS Mental Health Trust environments.
Worked closely with the System Architect at Octavia Information Systems (now fifosys) to produce a web interface and prototype for the system to handle Care Plans within an NHS Hospital Trust. A system was designed based on an n-tier architecture utilising a MS SQL server database platform.
A working prototype was developed using asp server-side includes, to enable a modular approach to the implementation of the final system, and a rapid development cycle. This allowed a wide range of users to be involved in the design process. As well as being a key application design stage, this prototype also helped overcome any pre-conceived hostility to the system. A data connector was also created to allow the system to integrate with a legacy IBM UniData system.
The project has been an overwhelming success. Business benefits such as 24/7 access to patient data, data accuracy, timely reporting to DOH standards, etc have resulted in the system being widely accepted by the user base.
SWLST were recently awarded a maximum 5/5 by the DOH for their implementation of their eCPA system (source: Commission for Health Improvement).

Pig Communications
Created a small and brief flash introduction to the Pig Communication website showing the company logo and name. Pig communications are a public relations company and wanted the introduction to have a light-hearted feel.
For the company logo, many pigs were drawn in various styles, shapes and colours. The clients had suggested a fierce looking pig and the final pig was chosen from the finalists for its slightly aggressive but cheeky look. The pig was originally coloured but this was later removed and for a stronger appearance, the pig's features were hardened and a bright pink was added to the nose - the black and pink matching the company text.
The pig appears on screen as if being drawn by an invisible hand and the sound effect of chalk on a blackboard was added to enhance the effect. Different levels of sound were used for the text: a deep voiced "pig", followed by a high pitched and hurried "communications" with the hoped effect of adding a bit of humour to the introduction. The pig then grunts twice as if coming to life and this signals the end of the introduction.
The user would then enter the Pig Communications website by clicking on the pig's nose which expands to fill the screen.

Octavia Information Systems
Produced a flash advert for the Octavia website (previous edition). The idea, to encourage a company its business would be boosted through the help of technology. Rather than lengthy pieces of text, short "keywords" were chosen to get the message across.
The keywords chosen for this were productivity, presence, efficiency, communication knowledge and business, each word appearing on its own against a background image relating to the subject. These keywords were interjected by the word "increase" as if to pose the question does the client want to increase presence for example.
After prompting the client with these keywords, the IT solutions are then provided. The movie ends abruptly bringing up the Octavia logo (previous edition).
The movie was given a soundtrack to coincide with certain events of the action.
